Your guide to wellness & preparedness

On an EF tour, teens try things they might never have attempted, talk to people they might never have met, and grow into someone they might never have become—all from experiences they can only get by travelling.

Parents

As you and your teen prepare for this incredible journey, we’re here to provide the tools and guidance needed to make it seamless, safe, and unforgettable.

Passports and travel documents

Having the right documentation is essential for smooth travel:

  • Passport validity: Ensure your teen’s passport is valid for at least six months past the tour’s return date.

  • Visas and re-entry requirements: Some destinations may require a travel visa or ETA for entry. Check the itinerary carefully, including layovers or transit countries. Non-Canadian citizens should confirm specific requirements with embassies or consulates. If you need help in this area, please contact our Traveller Support Team at 1-800-263-2806

  • Additional documentation: Certain destinations may require health-related forms or other travel documents. Log into your account here and use our Entry Requirements Tool to verify what you may need.

Passport information for non-binary travellers

For students with passports listing "X" as a gender marker:

  • Some countries may not recognize this designation. Check Canada’s Travel Advice and Advisory (travel.gc.ca) for specific guidance.

  • Certain destinations may require binary sex information (Male or Female), even with an "X" marker.

Health and medical needs

Ensuring your teenager stays healthy on tour starts with preparation:

  • Provide medical information: Share all relevant health details with their Group Leader—including allergies, medications, and behavioural health considerations—through the Health and Medical Profile

  • Pack medications thoughtfully: Ensure all prescriptions are in their original packaging, include copies of the prescription paperwork, and are stored in carry-on luggage. Pack extra doses to account for potential delays. If you have any questions or concerns regarding specific medications, feel free to contact Traveller Support at 1-800-263-2806 for more information.

  • If your teen is ever not feeling well on tour, they should let their Group Leader or Tour Director know as soon as possible—they’re there to support them.

Dietary needs and allergies

If your teenager has specific dietary needs:

  • Inform the Group Leader in advance: Early communication ensures accommodations can be made for included meals on tour.

  • Pack snacks: We arrange meal accommodations, but bringing snacks for long travel days is a good idea just in case.

Emergency contact information

Check that EF Tours and the Group Leader have accurate emergency contact information for someone who won't be travelling with the group and will be reachable during the trip.

Students

Your EF tour is the start of an incredible adventure. By staying mindful of your health and making the most of every moment, you’ll create memories to last a lifetime.

Rest and recharge

Tour days are exciting but busy. Prioritise rest to keep your energy up:

  • Use bus rides as an opportunity to rest or reflect on the day.

  • Get into a consistent sleep routine early to adjust to new time zones and full schedules.

Stay nourished and hydrated

Fuel your adventure with good meals and plenty of water:

  • Try local dishes and enjoy new flavours, but make sure to balance your meals to maintain a steady amount of energy throughout the day.

  • Always carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, especially during long walks or outdoor activities.

Mindfulness and coping

with nerves

Travelling can feel overwhelming at times, but staying mindful can help:

  • Use relaxation apps: Download tools like Headspace, Calm, or Smiling Mind for guided meditations.

  • Take deep breaths: If you’re feeling stressed, pause and breathe deeply to refocus.

  • Be present: Notice the sights, sounds, and people around you. Engage fully with the experience.

Homesickness is normal

It’s okay to miss home—it’s a common feeling for many first-time travellers:

  • Check in briefly: A quick message home can help, but avoid over-communicating as it can distract you from the experience.

  • Focus on positives: Reflect on the highlights of your day through journalling or conversations with your group.

  • Ask for support: Your Group Leader is there to help if you’re feeling overwhelmed

Medication and emergencies

  • Continue taking medications as prescribed, even on busy days.

  • If you’re not feeling well, let your Group Leader or Tour Director know as soon as possible—they’re there to support you.

Making the most of free time

Free time is your chance to explore and connect:

  • Explore with a buddy: Visit parks, local cafes, or markets in small groups.

  • Bond with your group: Use this time to put yourself out there, build friendships, and share experiences.

  • Capture the moment: Journalling or taking photos is a great way to reflect on your trip.

Staying connected mindfully

Being in touch with family is important, but staying engaged in the tour experience is just as vital:

  • Set limits on phone use: Designate specific times to check in, like after dinner.

  • Share the highlights: Focus on sharing the best parts of your day.

  • Use apps to stay present: Tools like Forest can help you reduce screen time and stay immersed in the moment.

  • Download music, podcasts, or audiobooks: These can really help you relax during long layovers and bus rides.
