Traveling from Lisbon to Barcelona, then to Rome and connecting to Paris, as a flight attendant often meant days—if not weeks—away from home. I quickly learned the art of packing light and efficiently. To avoid being stuck waiting at the baggage carousel while my fellow Cabin Crew members stood waiting for me, I made it a habit to stick with just my carry-on. Over my three years in this career, I honed in on travel hacks and essentials so that I could be travel-ready at all times. Here are six of my favourites:
1. Embrace Packing Cubes
Living out of a carry-on for extended periods pushed me to maximize my packing space. Packing cubes, the ultimate carry-on must-have, are fantastic for keeping everything organized while accommodating a surprising amount. They’re especially useful for diverse trips that require clothing for both tropical and colder climates. Just remember to check the airline’s weight and size restrictions for carry-ons to avoid overpacking and having to check in your bag.
2. Stick to Basics
Imagine it’s 3 AM, and CREWSCHED lights up my caller ID with a new assignment: a flight with a three-day layover in Rome, departing at 6 AM. My first priority is to think practically of what to pack based on the destination and weather. Essentials for such a trip might include at least three tops, two pairs of pants, a comfy pair of sneakers, and some nice sandals. The trick is to select versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched for various outfits. If you're traveling during the colder months, wear your bulkier items like sweaters, jackets, and boots to save space for the must-have essentials. You'll be grateful later when you're not struggling to carry a 20-pound suitcase up four flights of stairs in a hotel in Rome!
3. Travel Size Toiletries are Key
I’ve witnessed enough gate agents confiscate full-size bottles of expensive foundation or perfume to know how crucial travel-sized bottles are. They make getting through security a breeze and keep in mind many hotels provide mini toiletries too. This way, you can avoid lugging around large shampoo or body wash bottles. When you’re in a hurry making train or flight connections, traveling light is essential. Plus, you’ll have peace of mind that none of your products will go to waste.
4. Portable Charger: Stay Connected on the Go
Nothing is worse than having a dead phone at the airport or realizing that the USB port on the plane is out of order. Many airports have limited power outlets and charging stations that get crowded quickly. A portable charger for travel is an absolute must to keep you connected. Avoid crowded charging stations and gain reassurance knowing you have a backup. Just be sure to charge your portable charger when necessary!
5. Medication: Always Keep Them Close
Always pack your medication in your carry-on. Delays and lost luggage can happen, and the last thing you need is crucial prescriptions sitting in checked baggage that might not make it on board. Keeping them easily accessible is the safest option.
6. Water Bottle: Hydration Essential
This is an item best kept in your carry-on or personal item. I quickly learned to avoid drinking water served from jugs on planes. The water and waste systems on board supply potable water to washrooms and the galleries on the plane. It is filtered water that comes from water tanks usually located in the cargo underneath the main cabin. These water tanks are sterilized but not as often as one would hope. Opt for bottled water when possible or fill your water bottle at the airport after passing security. It’s key to stay hydrated while travelling. If you want to be especially cautious, consider skipping hot drinks like coffee or tea during your flight.
