Trail of the Caribou: Beaumont-Hamel to Amsterdam
At the Beaumont-Hamel, France, a great bronze caribou overlooks a deadly battleground where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment launched their offensive on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916. At the base of the memorial, three bronze tablets carry the names of brave Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in the First World War. The spectacular memorials and cemeteries, including Menin Gate and Tyne Cot, are symbols of the sacrifices of our ancestors and the respect Europeans have for Canada.
